Music

A special fee is charged for all individual applied music courses. †

  

Private Applied Study. By special permission of the Chair of the Music Department. A special fee is charged for private study. 1 credit. †

Applied Music

Private study is offered in most performance areas: Percussion, Piano, Woodwinds, Brass, Voice, and Composition. Incoming music majors must audition in the area of concentration. The area of study is designated by section number, as follows:

Music majors must take APPLIED PRIMARY classes for their main instrument, and may take APPLIED SECONDARY classes for a secondary instrument. Music minors take APPLIED SECONDARY classes to satisfy the requirements of the Minor program. Students not majoring or minoring in music may enroll in APPLIED ELECTIVE classes. With permission of the Music Department chair, earned primary credits may be substituted for required secondary credits. Earned secondary credits, however, may NOT be substituted for required primary credits.

Elective Applied Music

Elective private study in music. One half-hour lesson weekly.

    The Camerata Singers is a select mixed ensemble of 30-40 singers. The choir is devoted to presenting high caliber performances of a wide range of choral repertoire.   • MUSC 322 - Exploring African - American Voices through Art Songs and Arias by African - American Composers


    3 credits
    This course examines the solo vocal literature of African - American composers, who are often excluded from resource materials related to American art songs and operas. Through listening to audio recordings, examining the poetry/texts and exploring musical scores, students will discover historical composers as well as those still living, broadening their knowledge and understanding of African - Americans’ contributions to American classical vocal music. Students will utilize literary and musical concepts and historical perspectives (economic, political, cultural, racial) to assess the intent of the poets (in writing the texts) and the composers (realized in their art songs and arias) which were often based on societal and cultural trends that inspired the creation of the works.

    A study of the value and practical application of integrating the arts across all content areas of the curriculum with a focus on the musical arts.
