READ 620 - Word Study: Phonics, Spelling, and Language Structure 3 credits This course is designed to teach the fundamental principles and structures of the English language as well as the development of understanding and ability with these concepts for literacy from prealphabetic/emergent to mature learners. The speech-to-print and structured language approach is emphasized as integral for literacy development through exploration of phonetics, phonics, orthography, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Assessment of phonological awareness, phonics, and orthography and instruction for word knowledge growth across the components of language is taught to inform research-based practice.
