History, BA; Teacher Preparation in History and Social Science


Majors in history seeking an endorsement for History and Social Science secondary education in Virginia should be thoroughly familiar with the professional education requirements for entry into and completion of the Teacher Preparation program are explained on the Office of Teacher Preparation  catalog page. Concentrators must complete coursework in history, political science, geography, economics, psychology, sociology, and education. To qualify for HIST 382 - Practicum in Teaching History and the Social Sciences in the Secondary School , concentrators must complete both halves of world history and both halves of the US history survey courses, and either HIST 150 - Historical Inquiry I  or HIST 151 - Historical Inquiry II  with no less than a grade of C in each course. Concentrators will take HIST 300 - Teaching History and the Social Sciences in the Secondary School  in the spring semester before the year they will complete student teaching. Additionally, they must complete all coursework requirements and pass the required assessments for state licensure (Virginia Communication Literacy Assessment and Praxix II; Social Studies Content Knowledge) before they may proceed to student teaching (HIST 482 - Directed Teaching of Social Studies in the Secondary School ).

Civitae Core Requirements (39-40 credits)


Civitae Core  

History majors in Teacher Preparation may count Civitae Core courses satisfying major requirements as also satisfying their respective Pillar and Perspectives requirements.  The following are the courses in this major that may be used in this way:

  • HIST 125 , among others, can satisfy the Global Citizenship Pillar requirement, for students who place into a 211-level language course or above
  • HIST 221 , among others, can satisfy the Historical and Contemporary Insights Pillar requirement
  • POSC 100 , among others, can satisfy the Human Behavior and Social Institutions Pillar requirement
  • PSYC 101  can satisfy the Scientific Reasoning Pillar requirement

Courses satisfying major requirements that are designated as Civitae Core courses subsequent to the print deadline of this Catalog will not appear in the above listings but will be eligible to also satisfy Civitae Core requirements, subject to the same rules as the others.  (If doing so would otherwise decrease the total credits required for the degree below 120, General Elective credit must be substituted to restore the total.)  

Additional Degree Requirements (3 credits)


In addition to the courses required for the Civitae Core Curriculum Program, students completing the History BA Degree are required to take one additional course in either the Humanities or Foreign Language.

Major Requirements (59-62 credits)


As noted above, some courses that meet major requirements are also designated Civitae Core Curriculum courses; such courses taken to meet Core requirements will be considered to also satisfy the associated major requirements.

United States History (6 credits)


Choose one of the following US History courses:

European History (6 credits)


Choose six credits from courses at the 300-level or above identified as EU - European History Electives in the History Course Descriptions. 

Non-Western History and Politics (3 credits)


Choose three credits from courses at the 200-level or above identified as NW - Non-Western History Electives in the History Course Descriptions.

Note: This requirement may also be satisfied with POSC 375  - Latin American Politics and Government/3 credits

Political Science (6 credits)


Choose six credits from the following Political Science courses:
