Professional Writing Concentration (18 credits)

The concentration in Professional Writing provides students in the English major with a firm knowledge base in effective written communication and persuasion practices in public and professional spaces, leading to a variety of public communication jobs. Students will (1) study theories of persuasion for professional and public uses; (2) learn how to create workplace documents for a range of audiences and stakeholders.

Professional Writing Concentration - Core Requirements (9 Credits)

ENGL 219 - Introduction to Rhetorical Studies 3 credits
ENGL 301 - Rhetorical Criticism 3 credits
ENGL 319 - Technical Writing 3 credits
OR
ENGL 470 - Professional Writing Skills 3 credits
(ENGL 319 or ENGL 470 will also satisfy an English major requirement. Students who fulfill the English major requirement with one of these courses should fulfill the Professional Writing concentration core requirement with the other.)

Professional Writing Concentration - Electives (Select three from the following for a total of nine credits)

ENGL 210 - Forms and Genres 3 credits
ENGL 303 - Visual Rhetoric and Document Design 3 credits
ENGL 305 - Advanced Topics in Rhetoric and Professional Writing 3 credits
ENGL 492 - Internship in English 1-6 credits
OR
ENGL 490 - Independent Study 1-3 credits per semester
(ENGL 210 will fulfill a Professional Writing elective only when the course is offered as “Introduction to Digital Writing” )
