The degree Bachelor of Music with a Concentration in Education K-12 is designed to prepare the student to be endorsed and to teach music in the schools. Each student develops proficiency in voice or in instrumental studies, and acquires the skills necessary to communicate musical concepts. Through opportunities to observe and to teach in classroom situations each student develops professional teaching skills and dispositions.
Bachelor of Music/Education - completion of MUSC 145 with a grade of C or better and acceptance into the Teacher Prep program (may be completed before entering Longwood):
- a Virginia passing score on Praxis I Case Math and VCLA, or
- An equivalent passing score on the SAT or ACT,
- And a 3.0 GPA

Civitae Core Requirements (39-40 credits)
Music majors with a concentration in K-12 Music Education may count Civitae Core courses satisfying major requirements as also satisfying their respective Pillar and Perspectives requirements. The following are the courses in this major that may be used in this way:
- MUSC 225 is required to be taken to satisfy the Aesthetic Expression Pillar requirement
- EDUC 245 is required to be taken to satisfy the Human Behavior and Social Institutions Pillar requirement
- MUSC 331 is required to be taken to satisfy the Aesthetic Expression Perspectives requirement
Courses satisfying major requirements that are designated as Civiate Core courses subsequent to the print deadline of this Catalog will not appear in the above listings but will be eligible to also satisfy Civiate Core requirements, subject to the same rules as the others. (If doing so would otherwise decrease the total credits required for the degree below 120, General Elective credit must be substituted to restore the total.)
Transfer Students go to Transfer Student General Education for requirements.

Applied Music (10 credits)
Music Education majors who do not pass the Sophomore Promotional, or who are not making satisfactory progress in Applied Music study, will be advised to add a semester of Applied Music study prior to their Degree Recital.
