Mathematics Program
The Mathematics curriculum stresses breadth, theory, and depth in the study of mathematics while allowing the student the flexibility to choose among topics of their interest. In order to calculate the Math Major GPA, any course with the prefix MATH or MAED 352 should be included in the calculation with the following exceptions:
Civitae Core Requirements (39-40 credits)
Civitae Core
Mathematics majors may count Civitae Core courses satisfying major requirements as also satisfying their respective Civitae Core requirements, up to two Pillar courses and one Perspectives course. (Students pursuing Virginia teaching licensure are not restricted as to the number of courses.) The following are the courses in this major that may be used in this way:
- MATH 171 is required to be taken to satisfy the Quantitative Reasoning Pillar requirement
- Mathematics majors seeking Secondary Education Endorsement are required to take EDUC 245 to satisfy the Human Behavior and Social Institutions Pillar requirement, and either MATH 304 or MATH 320 to fulfill the Quantitative Reasoning Perspectives requirement.
Transfer Students go to Transfer Student General Education for requirements.

Major Requirements (41 credits)
Electives (9-12 credits)
Students must complete a total of 12 additional credits consisting of Mathematics courses at the 300-400 level. Additionally, among the Civitae Core Perspectives courses, only MATH 301 and one of MATH 304 or MATH 320 may count toward Mathematics elective credit.
Electives may NOT include:
Secondary Education Endorsement, grades 6-12 (26 credits)
*MATH 335 and one of MATH 304 or MATH 320 count towards the mathematics major.
***Students must be admitted to the Teacher Preparation Program before they will be permitted to enroll in any subsequent 300-400 level EDUC courses.
