Visual and Performing Arts; Theatre Education Concentration (Theatre Arts: PK - 12)

Mission Statement

The Longwood University Theatre Program offers a productive, creative and collaborative model in all its concentrations of theatre through education, professional, and production experiences. The program is dedicated to the development of students in their personal strengths, their personal career plan, and their personal development of citizen leadership. The graduates of our program will be prepared to enter the workforce as citizen leaders, theatre professionals, or educators. Upon completion of our program graduates will have the qualifications to pursue advanced degrees, or choose to utilize highly transferable skills to seek theatre or other career opportunities.

The Longwood University Theatre Program will become regionally recognized by being on the forefront of inclusivity, innovation, interdisciplinary partnerships, and by the intellectual and creative accomplishments of its faculty, students, and staff.

Degrees Offered

The Program provides degree programs of study leading to either a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual and Performing Arts or a Bachelor of Arts degree. 

Those students seeking teacher certification must select the Applied concentration within the Bachelor of Arts Degree. After completing the degree and program requirements, students receive a Visual and Performing Arts, BA; Theatre Education Concentration degree, and they are eligible for licensure in Theatre Arts (PK-12) Education.

For those who are seeking careers in educational theatre and who seek the Educational Endorsement, see professional education requirements. Those students will also be carefully advised, both in Theatre, Art, and Graphic and Animation Design (TAGD) and in Education (EDUC), to aid in timely matriculation. 

Civitae Core Requirements (39-40 credits)


Civitae Core Curriculum   

Theatre majors may count Civitae Core courses satisfying major requirements as also satisfying their respective Civitae Core requirements, up to two Pillar courses and one Perspectives course.  (Students pursuing Virginia teaching licensure are not restricted as to the number of courses.)  The following are the courses in this major that may be used in this way:  

  • COMM 101  fulfills the Aesthetic Pillar requirement.
  • EDUC 245  fulfills the Human Behavior and Social Institutions Pillar requirement.
  • THEA 432  fulfills the Historical and Contemporary Insights Perspectives requirement.

Courses satisfying major requirements that are designated as Civitae Core courses subsequent to the print deadline of this Catalog will not appear in the above listings but will be eligible to also satisfy Civitae Core requirements, subject to the same rules as the others.  (If doing so would otherwise decrease the total credits required for the degree below 120, General Elective credit must be substituted to restore the total.)

In addition to the courses required for Civitae Core, students are required to take an additional course to earn a degree.
