Elementary and Middle School Education and Teaching, BS

This degree program prepares students seeking initial teaching licensure in Elementary Education (PK-6), who are also interested in preparing for an additional Middle School (6-8) endorsement in an identified concentration (English, Math, Natural Science, or Social Science). Elementary and Middle School Education and Teaching students participate in a variety of place-based and authentic field experiences, explore disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses in the Liberal Arts, engage in equity-driven teacher preparation, and expand their identities as citizen leaders throughout the Civitae Core curriculum. Additionally, they take advanced courses in their identified concentration.

Civitae Core Requirements (39-40 credits)


Elementary and Middle School education and Teaching majors must take the following courses to satisfy both

  • Aesthetic Expression (FAES) Pillar: ENGL 280  
  • Historical & Contemporary Insights (FHCI) Pillar: HIST 222  
  • Human Behavior & Social Institutions (FHBS) Pillar: EDUC 245  
  • Scientific Reasoning (FSRC) Pillar: BIOL 114  

Perspective Courses:

  • Aesthetic Expression (PAES) Perspective: ART 389  or MUSC 389  or THEA 389 
  • Historical & Contemporary Insights (PHCI) Perspective: GEOG 352  
  • Scientific Reasoning (PSRC) Perspective: EASC 300  

Additional Degree Requirements (3 credits)


Major Requirements (15 credits + 18 in Civitae)


Middle Level Concentrations (Choose one)


Any ENGL course at the 300 or 400 level (3 credits)


Optional Algebra I Endorsement


Students can add an additional endorsement in Algebra I. See catalog description.

Any ANTH, ECON, GEOG, HIST, POSC, or SOCL course at the 300 or 400 level (3 credits)
