Elementary Education and Teaching, BS

This degree program prepares students seeking initial teaching licensure in Elementary Education (PK-6). Elementary Education and Teaching students participate in a variety of place-based and authentic field experiences, explore disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses in the Liberal Arts, engage in equity-driven teacher preparation, and expand their identities as citizen leaders throughout the Civitae Core curriculum.

Civitae Core Requirements (39-40 Credits)


Elementary Education and Teaching majors must take the following courses to satisfy both Civitae Core  and major requirements:

  • Aesthetic Expression (FAES) Pillar: ENGL 280  
  • Historical & Contemporary Insights (FHCI) Pillar: HIST 222  
  • Human Behavior & Social Institutions (FHBS) Pillar: EDUC 245  
  • Scientific Reasoning (FSRC) Pillar: BIOL 114 ​ 

Perspective Courses:

  • Aesthetic Expression (PAES) Perspective: ART 389  or MUSC 389  or THEA 389  
  • Historical & Contemporary Insights (PHCI) Perspective: GEOG 352 
  • Scientific Reasoning (PSRC) Perspective: EASC 300

Major Requirements (15 credits + 18 credits in Civitae)


Professional Requirements for Elementary Education and Teaching Licensure (48 credits + 3 in Civitae)


Electives (14-15 credits)


Elementary Education and Teaching majors have 14-15 credit hours to use toward their degrees as they pursue (inter)disciplinary study.
