The Mathematics curriculum stresses breadth, theory, and depth in the study of mathematics while allowing the student the flexibility to choose among topics of their interest.

Mathematics Program

The mathematics major gives students foundational knowledge in algebra, analysis, calculus, and statistics. Students must concentrate in one of two areas: General Mathematics or Mathematics Education. Students choosing the General Mathematics Concentration are encouraged to minor in a subject that complements their mathematics knowledge. The mathematics education concentration has been designed to satisfy Virginia standards for teaching licensure in secondary mathematics.

Civitae Core Requirements (39-40 credits)

Civitae Core Curriculum

Mathematics majors may count Civitae Core courses satisfying major requirements as also satisfying their respective Civitae Core requirements, up to two Pillar courses and one Perspectives course.  (Students pursuing Virginia teaching licensure are not restricted as to the number of courses.)  The following are the courses in this major that may be used in this way:

  • All Mathematics majors are required to take MATH 171 , which satisfies the Quantitative Reasoning Pillar requirement.
  • Mathematics majors in the General Mathematics Concentration are required to take one of MATH 301 , MATH 304 , or MATH 320 , any of which fulfill the Quantitative Reasoning Perspectives requirement.
  • Mathematics majors in the Mathematics Education Concentration are required to take EDUC 245 , which satisfies the Human Behavior and Social Institutions Pillar requirement, and either MATH 304  or MATH 320 , which fulfill the Quantitative Reasoning Perspectives requirement.

Additional Degree Requirements (3-4 credits)

BS Degree: 3-4 credits from:

General Mathematics Concentration (10 credits + 3 credits counted in Civitae)

Mathematics Education Concentration (40 credits + 6 credits counted in Civitae)

This concentration has been designed to meet all Virginia standards for students to be licensed to teach mathematics in grades 6-12.

*Mathematics electives may NOT include:
