WGST 313 - Gender and Sexuality in Popular Music and Art 3 credits In this course, we will examine the ways in which popular music artists draw from other art forms, such as theater, painting, dance, mythology, poetry, and/or literature to create transformative works that speak to issues pertaining to gender and sexuality. We examine and analyze how artists challenge patriarchal systems that have subordinated and denied full artistic legitimacy to women and LGBTQ+ creators and how such artistic approaches inform our notions of popular music heritage and canon. A minimum amount of music terminology will also be covered.
