CTZN 318 - Being Human - Human Genetics and Society - Human Behavior and Social Perspectives

Students will contemplate how the individual person’s genome contributes to their identity as Human. Modern technology is approaching a point where genome modifications, for repair or enhancement, may become commonplace. During the course, we will use models of human genetics and genetic disorders to explore what is “normal” and investigate where genetic variation leads to different human experiences. Students will explore critical ethical and social lenses considering how and when genetic information might be modified for medical, enhancement, or cosmetic purposes, and consider the feasibility of modern biotechnology to reliably and safely modify genomes. As a Brock Experience, this course will include travel to a regional hub of innovation where students will interact with local experts in human genetics and other relevant fields. The course calendar will be divided into three components: Pre-Travel, Fieldwork, and Post-Travel.
