CSDS 497 - Roles, Responsibilities, and Competencies of the SLPA 3 credits Three-credit hybrid course including instruction on the roles, responsibilities, scope of practice, professional issues, and ethics of a speech language pathologist assistant (SLPA). Additionally, the course will cover service delivery models, intervention methods, implementation of plan of care, documentation, and collaboration with the SLP. During the course students will complete a supervised experience which will include 80 hours of direct client, student, or patient services. In 489, which is the prerequisite to this course, students will complete 25 observation hours. American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) requires a minimum of 80 hours of direct clinical experience and 20 hours of indirect services. Thus, after the completion of CSDS 489 and CSDS 497 students will meet ASHA’s Standard III (Supervised Clinical Experience) requirements.
